What is Psoriasis?
Psoriasis is a chronic autoimmune skin disorder that causes the rapid buildup of skin cells, leading to scaling on the skin’s surface. Inflammation and redness around the scales are common. It often appears as red, itchy, and scaly patches.
Causes
-
Immune system dysfunction: The immune system attacks healthy skin cells by mistake, speeding up skin cell production.
-
Genetics: Family history increases risk.
-
Triggers: Stress, infections, cold weather, smoking, alcohol, certain medications, and skin injury.
Types of Psoriasis
-
Plaque Psoriasis (most common): Raised, red patches covered with silvery scales.
-
Guttate Psoriasis: Small, drop-shaped spots, often triggered by infections.
-
Inverse Psoriasis: Smooth, shiny patches in skin folds like armpits, groin.
-
Pustular Psoriasis: White pustules (blisters of non-infectious pus) surrounded by red skin.
-
Erythrodermic Psoriasis: Severe, widespread redness, scaling, and shedding of skin; a medical emergency.
-
Nail Psoriasis: Pitting, discoloration, and crumbling of nails.
-
Psoriatic Arthritis: Inflammation of joints combined with skin symptoms.
Symptoms
-
Red patches of skin covered with thick, silvery scales
-
Dry, cracked skin that may bleed
-
Itching, burning, or soreness
-
Thickened or pitted nails
-
Joint pain and swelling (in psoriatic arthritis)
Diagnosis
-
Physical examination of the skin, scalp, and nails
-
Medical history
-
Sometimes a skin biopsy
