Hernia
What is a Hernia?
A hernia occurs when an organ or fatty tissue pushes through a weak spot or tear in the surrounding muscle or connective tissue wall. It commonly happens in the abdomen.
Common Types of Hernia
-
Inguinal Hernia
-
Most common type
-
Occurs in the groin area
-
More common in men
-
-
Femoral Hernia
-
Occurs just below the groin
-
More common in women
-
-
Umbilical Hernia
-
Occurs near the belly button
-
Common in infants and obese adults
-
-
Hiatal Hernia
-
Occurs when part of the stomach pushes up through the diaphragm into the chest cavity
-
-
Incisional Hernia
-
Occurs at the site of a previous surgical incision
-
Causes and Risk Factors
-
Weakness in abdominal muscles (congenital or acquired)
-
Heavy lifting or straining
-
Chronic coughing or sneezing
-
Obesity
-
Pregnancy
-
Constipation and straining during bowel movements
-
Aging
Symptoms
-
Visible bulge or lump in the affected area
-
Pain or discomfort, especially when bending over, coughing, or lifting
-
Weakness, pressure, or heaviness in the abdomen or groin
-
Burning or aching sensation at the bulge
-
In severe cases (strangulated hernia): sudden pain, redness, nausea, vomiting — requires emergency care
Diagnosis
-
Physical examination
-
Ultrasound or CT scan (if needed)
Treatment
Conservative Management (for small or asymptomatic hernias)
-
Watchful waiting
-
Avoid heavy lifting or straining
-
Wearing a supportive truss or binder (temporary)
Surgical Treatment
-
Herniorrhaphy: Repair of the hernia by stitching the muscle wall
-
Hernioplasty: Repair using mesh to reinforce the muscle wall
-
Surgery can be done via open surgery or laparoscopic (minimally invasive) methods
Complications (if untreated)
-
Incarceration: Hernia contents get stuck and cannot be pushed back
-
Strangulation: Blood supply to the herniated tissue is cut off — medical emergency
Prevention Tips
-
Maintain healthy weight
-
Avoid heavy lifting or use proper lifting techniques
-
Treat chronic cough or constipation
-
Strengthen abdominal muscles with exercises (after consulting a doctor)
