Fordyce Spots
Fordyce Spots
What Are Fordyce Spots?
Fordyce spots are small, raised, pale, yellowish or white bumps or spots that commonly appear on the lips, inside the cheeks, and on the genitalia. They are ectopic sebaceous (oil) glands — meaning sebaceous glands located in areas where they typically are not found, and they are completely harmless.
Causes
-
Normal anatomical variation: Fordyce spots are a natural part of the skin’s anatomy.
-
Sebaceous glands: These are tiny oil glands that produce sebum (oil) and usually reside within hair follicles, but in Fordyce spots, they appear on the skin surface without hair follicles.
-
No infection or disease: They are not caused by infections, viruses, or poor hygiene.
Appearance and Symptoms
-
Size: Usually 1 to 3 mm in diameter.
-
Color: Pale, white, yellowish, or skin-colored.
-
Location: Commonly on the vermilion border of the lips, inner cheeks, and genital areas (penis, scrotum, labia).
-
Symptoms: Typically asymptomatic — no pain or itching.
-
Number: May appear singly or in clusters.
Who Gets Fordyce Spots?
-
Found in both men and women.
-
Commonly appear during puberty or adulthood.
-
Usually more visible with age.
Diagnosis
-
Usually diagnosed visually by a dermatologist or healthcare provider.
-
No special tests required.
-
If uncertain, dermoscopy or biopsy can be done, but rarely needed.
Treatment
-
Usually no treatment necessary because Fordyce spots are benign and harmless.
-
Cosmetic concerns:
-
Laser therapy (CO2 laser or pulsed dye laser) can reduce appearance.
-
Topical treatments such as tretinoin (retinoids) may help.
-
Micro-punch surgery or electrosurgery in rare cases.
-
-
Avoid aggressive treatments unless recommended by a dermatologist.
Prevention
-
No known prevention since they are a normal anatomical feature.
-
Maintain good hygiene to avoid any secondary infections.
When to See a Doctor
-
If spots change color, size rapidly, or cause pain.
-
If you are unsure whether the bumps are Fordyce spots or something else (e.g., herpes, warts).
-
If cosmetic appearance bothers you and you want treatment options.
Summary
-
Fordyce spots are harmless ectopic sebaceous glands appearing as small, pale bumps on lips, cheeks, and genitals.
-
No treatment needed unless for cosmetic reasons.
-
They are a normal skin variation, not contagious or dangerous.
