Fatty Liver
What is Fatty Liver?
Fatty liver is a condition where excess fat builds up in the liver cells. Normally, the liver contains some fat, but when fat makes up more than 5-10% of the liver’s weight, it’s called fatty liver disease.
Types of Fatty Liver
-
Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease (NAFLD): Fat accumulation not caused by alcohol use. Often linked to obesity, diabetes, high cholesterol, or metabolic syndrome.
-
Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease: Caused by excessive alcohol consumption leading to fat buildup in the liver.
Causes
-
Excess alcohol intake (for alcoholic fatty liver)
-
Obesity and overweight
-
Insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes
-
High cholesterol and triglycerides
-
Poor diet high in fats and sugars
-
Rapid weight loss
-
Certain medications
-
Genetic factors
Symptoms
Fatty liver is often asymptomatic (no symptoms), especially early on. When symptoms appear, they may include:
-
Fatigue or weakness
-
Mild abdominal discomfort or pain in the upper right abdomen
-
Enlarged liver (detectable on medical exam)
-
In advanced cases, jaundice, swelling, or confusion (if liver damage progresses)
Diagnosis
-
Blood tests (liver enzymes like ALT, AST)
-
Imaging tests (ultrasound, CT scan, MRI)
-
Sometimes liver biopsy for confirmation and staging
Complications
If untreated, fatty liver can progress to:
-
Non-Alcoholic Steatohepatitis (NASH) — inflammation and liver cell damage
-
Liver fibrosis (scarring)
-
Cirrhosis (severe scarring and liver dysfunction)
-
Liver failure or liver cancer (rare but serious)
Treatment and Management
Lifestyle Changes
-
Weight loss: gradual and sustained (5-10% body weight loss can reduce liver fat)
-
Healthy diet: low in saturated fats, sugars, refined carbs; rich in vegetables, fruits, whole grains, lean proteins
-
Exercise: at least 150 minutes of moderate activity weekly
-
Avoid alcohol completely (especially in alcoholic fatty liver)
-
Control blood sugar and cholesterol levels
Medical Treatments
Currently, no specific FDA-approved drugs for fatty liver, but treatment focuses on controlling underlying causes like diabetes or high cholesterol.
Homeopathic and Ayurvedic Approaches
Homeopathy (consult a professional)
-
Chelidonium majus: for liver support and jaundice
-
Carduus marianus: helps detoxify and support liver health
-
Lycopodium: useful for digestive and liver disorders
Ayurveda
-
Use of Bhumyamalaki (Phyllanthus niruri), Kutki (Picrorhiza kurroa), and Triphala to support liver function
-
Emphasis on detoxification (Panchakarma)
-
Diet modification with lighter, easy-to-digest foods
-
Lifestyle balancing (regular routines, avoiding fatty/oily foods)
Summary
Fatty liver is a common but potentially serious condition due to excess fat in the liver. Early detection and lifestyle changes can prevent progression to severe liver disease. Regular medical follow-up is important.
